Realtors® care about the community in which they live and work. John Ludlow, along with his wife, Sue, founded Through a Child’s Eyes (TACE) six years ago. The program, a partnership between the Rotary Club of Wilsonville and the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, provides new opportunities and activities for the children of incarcerated mothers, educational support services to caregivers and their families, and resources to incarcerated parents to improve parenting skills and develop positive relationships with their children. Every December, families are reunited in a prison visiting room and enjoy a visit from Santa Claus (played by Ludlow). In July, families may gather inside the prison walls to spend a day eating a barbeque lunch, playing games, winning prizes, creating arts and crafts, and other activities. TACE was recognized by the Oregon Department of Corrections with an Outstanding Service Award and was a nominee for the Oregon Volunteer Award in 2006. In addition, TACE was recognized by International Rotary President William Boyd in 2007 with a “Significant Achievement” Award.
Since the inception of TACE, Ludlow has been the chairman and chief fundraiser (raising $12,000 to $16,000 annually) for the summer event. He secures donations of gifts for children for the winter holiday visit. In addition, he has promoted the program to other correctional facilities in Washington and Oregon. In the past year, Ludlow volunteered a total of 220 hours to the TACE program.
In honor of John’s impressive work in the community, $1,000 will be donated by the Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors® to his charity of choice, the Through a Child’s Eyes program.
